Regional Information


The Southern Indiana Development Commission is a five county economic development district and regional planning commission that was first organized in mid 1972 as the Center for Economic Development. In 1973, the group organized under Indiana Code and adopted the name Southern Indiana Development Commission. The Commission is organized under Indiana Code 36-7-7-1. SIDC has provided 45 years of service to Daviess, Greene, Knox, Lawrence, and Martin Counties.

The Southern Indiana Development Commission's Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS)

The CEDS annual update is the result of a local planning process designed to guide the economic growth the of District. The CEDS was produced with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce - Economic Development Administration (EDA).

Daviess County

Are you looking for a nice relaxing getaway with something for the whole family to enjoy? Then Daviess County is the place to be. Daviess County is home to many activities and annual events that make visitors come back more than once. Before going further into the visiting side of Daviess County, let’s venture into the economic and development side.


Geographically, Daviess County is located in southwestern Indiana and is bordered by Martin, Greene, Pike, and Knox counties. There are seven incorporated areas within Daviess County, with a total population of 32,064 (2012 Estimate). Washington is the county seat and the largest community with a population of 11,509.

Greene County

Forested hills. Lush vegetation. A sprawling countryside. Sounds like a wonderful place to visit, but maybe too far away. It’s right here in our backyard. Greene County, located in southwestern Indiana, has much to offer its community and visitors. This overview will provide you with a more sufficient data regarding the economics, development, and other facets of the county.


As mentioned above, Greene County is located in southwestern Indiana, bordered by 8 other counties. Greene County is predominantly rural; however, there are seven incorporated areas within the county. The two most populated include the county seat of Bloomfield with a population of 2,405, and also Linton, with a population of 5,413.

Knox County

Knox County, known for its historical landmarks, is located right on the Wabash River in southwestern Indiana. One can fish or boat in the various waterways in Knox County, or one could visit the many historical locations such as the Ebner-Free House, Grouseland, and the Fort Knox site. Between 1800-1812, Grouseland was the home of William Henry Harrison, our 9th President of the United States. Vincennes is also the home of the George Rogers Clark Memorial; this memorial is dedicated to Lieutenant George Rogers Clark, who led soldiers to victory in a battle during the American Revolution. As you can see, Knox County is certainly an appealing place for visitors.

Lawrence County

Lawrence County is located in southwestern Indiana. The County comprises a total of 448.8 square miles or 287,232 acres. The county is predominately rural in nature with scattered settlements. The total population of Lawrence County is 46,078 (Estimated 2012). Major population centers are Bedford with a population of 13,413, and Mitchell with a population of 4,350.

Martin County

When describing Martin County, one would probably mention the beautiful Martin County State Forest, the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center which provides many jobs for the community, and perhaps even the Jug Rox Nature Preserve. Martin County is one of the five counties that comprise the Southern Indiana Development Commission, and provides its community the opportunity for growth and expansion.




Martin County covers 215,200 acres and is located in west south-central Indiana. The county is predominantly rural with scattered settlements including Loogootee, Crane, and Shoals. Of these three, Loogootee is the largest city with a population of 2,751.
